Beatrix Sassen

Exhibition Dates:  October 28th - December 30th, 2012.

Beatrix Sassen (born 1945) studied under Joseph Beuys between 1962 and 1965, and under Erwin Heerich at the Dusseldorf Art Academy from 1975 to 1978.  Her sculptural work explores the human figure, a subject that was also presented in the work of previous exhibitions in 2012.  Her preferred materials include wood, stone, iron, bronze, and lead.  The figurative, life-sized sculptures and partially painted busts evoke the Classical beauty and lightness of ancient Greece and the Italian Renaissance.

In addition to the sculptures, Sassen also created stage sets for several drama theaters, including the State Theater Darmstadt:  Wintertime Traveling, Eisenach, The Art of Fugue, Le Sacre de Printemps/Transfigured Night.  Some of these theater scenes are documented in the Kunstverein.  In the courtyard of the Kunstverein is also a sculpture of a woman's face in profile.  Upon closer inspection, it turns out to be an impression in the three-meter-high aluminum plate - a miracle with a mysterious smile, the same concept that is found in her other sculptures.

The exhibition of "Parallel 20" (located in the Old Town Hall in Neuenhaus) features the images of Hans Elbeshausen and is available for viewing between October 17th and November 11th, 2012.  The Parallel series is a joint project between the Kunstverein and the city of Neuenhaus.
