With "Medulla Plaza" the Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim presents the first institutional solo exhibition of Vanessa Safavi (* 1980 in Lausanne, Switzerland) in Germany.
Safavi's works are ironically witty, playful, sensual in their use of materials and they combine clarity, lightness and poetics. By linking the Latin term "medulla", the biological name for the core areas of various organs, and the Italian "plaza" - with which the light-heartedness of wandering tourists can be associated - the exhibition title suggests the unexpectedly refreshing way of looking at the human organism. On the one hand, the selected forms and objects symbolise individual parts of the body, while at the same time leaving room for further interpretations. Alongside Safavis sculptures and wall works, site-specific installations play a central role in Safavis' work. The exhibition "Medulla Plaza" also focuses on a space-consuming, sculptural installation ("Life as a Comedy"), which was developed especially for the Kunstverein exhibition and at the same time conceals the mural by Khaled Al-Saai.
