Martín Mele: In this white cube there is no hunger (Detail)

In this white cube there is no hunger

18 October - 28 December 2014

Commuting between Düsseldorf and Buenos Aires, Mele is a traveller. Following the principle of the ready-mades, he processes things into "live sculptures". He finds the material - rejects of our society that have been stripped of their primary functions - during his many journeys at flea markets or on the outskirts of streets. He appreciates not only the special aesthetics of these existences but also the stories they carry within them, which he knows how to mix with his own. Cups, plates, chests, chairs, chains, key rings and fabrics tell at least as much about Martín Mele as about himself.
Since his works and groups of objects also consciously refer to historical artist positions, one could see them as playful interpretations of object art.

Martín Mele, born 1960 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), studied at the art academies of Arnhem (Netherlands), P. Pueyrredón, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Düsseldorf (with Markus Lüpertz). He lives and works in Buenos Aires and Düsseldorf.
