Squares, triangles, or parallelograms in yellow, red, or black: strictly geometric forms and monochrome color surfaces are Lienhard von Monkiewitsch's instruments with which the 1941-born painter, graphic artist, and object artist creates illusions of space, of apparent three-dimensionality and transparency in his paintings. Von Monkiewitsch's works play with perception and viewing habitsof the observer. For what at first appears as a convincing spatial perspective or plastic body quickly turns out to be a perfectly constructed composition on a two-dimensional surface.Inspired by Minimal Art and Constructivism, von Monkiewitsch, with his strongly reduced formal language, is in search of a way to create an ultimate aesthetic only through forms and colour - generated by measure, number and symmetry. His latest works, including furniture sculptures, play with trompel'oeil and illusionism. The Kunstverein is also presenting the series "Kunstkritische Bibliothek" (Art Critical Library), edited by Walter Vitt, which has meanwhile been published in 24 volumes and for which von Monkiewitsch has designed the titles. http://www.aica.de/publikationen/schriften-zur-kunstkritik/index.html#753001a26912dc42e
