Works and joint projects by Hans Eijkelboom and Peter Spaans are the results of more or less aimless wanderings through cities and landscapes. They focus their attention on street systems, squares, relics from the past, and contemporary urban and landscape architecture. As insiders, they look through the eyes of outsiders. Their potential results from diverse observations of urban spaces - whether in New York or in the Netherlands. They present their photographic works in tableaux that resemble the labyrinths of cities and places they have roamed with their digital cameras.
The joint work of the two artists has a documentary character first and foremost. But the seemingly casual "artlessness" undermines these documentations and challenges the viewer to participate in the irritation caused by the new view of the surroundings he thought he knew.
Hans Eijkelboom began to create a photographic diary on 8 November 1992, which he intends to continue until 2007. The photographs show fragments of his everyday life that reveal something of the source of his consciousness as well as his constantly changing view of the world. They are documented in 14 small books so far, which are an appreciated rarity among artists' books.
On his expeditions, Peter Spaans deals primarily with the loss of culture and the neglect of identities. His photographs are almost always devoid of people. They show how cultural poverty and loss of identity determine environmental design and vice versa.
